Marriage for Convenience

Theirs was never a romantic love story. Their relationship started out as one that was largely based on carnal indulgence.

Chikki was 21 years old then and was struggling with her college education. Her dad just told her that he will no longer be financially supporting her because of her irresponsible ways. Being in a new country, she had to make a choice. She needed to take out a student loan to finish her studies.

Along came Tony, a soldier about to be deployed to Afghanistan. Chikki thought that if she gets married, she will no longer need her dad to sign off her application for a student loan. In a matter-of-fact manner, she told Tony about her plan.

"That sounds practical. Anyway, if I get killed on duty, you will be a free woman once again." This was all Tony could say.

"This is suicide", Chikki thought. But she could not say that in front of him. Instead, she said, "You're right. Anyway, we can afford to get a divorce if this doesn't work out." It was as if she had no control over her words.

With that plan in mind, they made the most of their time together. She juggled studies, work, and Tony.

Two days before Tony had to leave for Afghanistan, he brought Chikki to a bar where his band was playing. With all his family and close friends around, Tony was sure of what he has to do.

His band was about to sing "Leaving on a Jet Plane" when Tony said: This song is for my wife, Chikki, who will have to endure being married to me starting tomorrow.

Shocked, amazed, afraid, and terrified - Chikki was all that. She didn't expect this kind of thing. No sappy proposals, no romantic songs, just a simple civil wedding with no family and friends around.

At that moment, however, she realized that if they had to get married, they had to try to make things work. She knew that Tony does truly care for her. The least she can do is try to genuinely care for him, too.

That was seven years ago. Today, we have a beautiful three-year-old son and a happy married life! And yes, my student loan has been paid up!
