Is My Gaming Killing Our Relationship?

Among the most popular questions around here are those centered around gaming. From "Help! My husband's XBOX is ruining our relationship" to even a few poor girls so desperate they have tried to conjure up ways for their guy's XBOX console to mysteriously disappear, our inbox has been flooded with it all. As this discussion usually goes between the two sexes, the woman feels neglected and the man doesn't see why – which usually ends in a big fight and someone . . . i.e you . . . sleeping on the couch.

There are always two completely different emotions when it comes to this sensitive situation. She says she feels forgotten and you really don't see the big deal because after all, you are home with her. So, who is right here, ‘fellas? Well, we hate to burst your bubble but anytime one partner feels neglected – there is a problem. Even if you don't see a problem with an arrangement, an arrangement only works if it works for both partners.
If you notice that you are playing for long periods of time, losing track of time, neglecting other things you once enjoyed or becoming angry at any distractions that come your way while gaming – you may not only have a relationship issue, but also a personal one. Believe it or not, just like any other "feel good" activity or drug, gaming can be highly addictive.

The solution to this modern day battle? Find a happy medium. You don't have to give up your hobby but you can't keep neglecting your relationship either. Solve this problem by setting aside a few hours every week and then, leave that controller in its place. Don't plan your partner time around the XBOX, plan your XBOX around your partner time. Be happy to pause your game when need be and pay extra attention to your partner when you would normally be hoarded up in your game room.

Remember, guys, the key to any relationship is compromise.
