Holiday Gift Guide

The holidays are coming and you need to be prepared. In the current economy you can’t afford to waste time or money; and that means you should have a game plan before you head out to shop.

If you aren’t the type of person who enjoys shopping then pre-planning is even more important. Here’s my holiday gift guide for the shopping challenged:

  1. Who are you shopping for? - This is a question that can’t just be answered with one word. When you ask yourself “who” you’re shopping for, be sure to consider all the facets of that person. What are their sizes? What are their favorite colors and scents? Do they have any hobbies or special interests? Don’t just buy gifts that you think are cool—make an effort to buy things the other person will appreciate. Many people now have online wish lists that they maintain throughout the year, so find out if any of your recipients has them and choose something from there for a can’t-miss gift.
  2. What is your budget? - Knowing how much you have to spend before you go shopping is imperative if you want to avoid impulse buying and creating debt. Allot a certain amount to each person and stick to it. If you do go over budget on any one gift, try to adjust the other gifts to reflect it so that you still stay within your overall budget.
  3. Make a list. - Take it from Santa...the most experienced gift giver in the world. You gotta have a list (and check it twice)! Once you get out into the fray of the mall you can easily get distracted by the crowds, sale signs, music, and the smell of the food court. Writing down your shopping list is the best way to ensure you will not forget anything and stay within your budget.
  4. Wrap it up! - Don’t forget that everything you buy needs to be wrapped. If you can afford it you can get it wrapped at the store by a pro. But it’s more economical to do it yourself—especially if you have several gifts that need to be done. Buy a high-quality paper that won’t tear easily so it doesn’t rip and reveal your surprise before the holiday arrives. Use bows and ribbons that are coordinated to match the paper for an overall beautiful presentation. Keep in mind when you are shopping that it is easier to wrap gifts if they are in boxes, so if you buy something that doesn’t come in a box or is an odd shape, ask the store clerk if they have any empty boxes you can use to place the gift in before you wrap it.

Even if you’re the type of person who hates shopping or never knows what to buy as a gift, you’ll be thrilled to see the response you get when your friends, family or lover opens their special surprise on the holiday.
