The anticipation of the other person’s surprise and joy when they open up a carefully selected present from you is part of the fun of the season. But buying Christmas gifts for men can be challenging for some women. He might have expensive taste, or perhaps he seems to already have everything he could ever want. How can you find something that he’ll really cherish?

One of the most important first steps is to find out what he’s into as a hobby. Many men have hobbies that range from woodworking to video gaming and everything in between. Some even have collections of books, sports memorabilia, or other things that they find interesting. Still others have regular activities they enjoy—bike riding, camping, cooking or fixing up their classic car.

Once you know what he likes to do in his spare time, the possibilities are endless. For example, if he has a classic Corvette that is his pride and joy, you can buy him accessories from the dealership, clothing with Corvette emblem, tickets to a classic car show, or even a coffee table book featuring the history of Corvettes in photos.

Men have entirely different ways of looking at gifts. Whereas women often take offense at a gift that is practical (don’t ever buy your wife an appliance for her birthday!), men appreciate things like tools or gift cards to the home improvement store. Take care to choose items that are made with excellent craftsmanship and built to last. You can be sure that if you buy something for a man, he will use it. You want your gift to stand the test of time and not fall apart after the first couple times he tries it out.

Finally, don’t buy something new for him to “try.” If he has worn the same cologne for the past five years, buying something totally new that he’s never seen before is not going to go over. If he prefers to buy only Sony electronics, buying him a Samsung just because you think it looked better is a bad idea.

Buying Christmas gifts for men isn’t complicated, but it is certainly much different than buying gifts for women. If you really want to delight that special man in your life, be willing to look at things from his point of view and select your gift based on what will really thrill him on Christmas Day.
