Got Money Honey? Experiencing Money Gap

Money Woes

Money is one of the leading causes of problems within a relationship.  So, if you are having issues regarding money at least you can take solace in the fact that you are definitely not alone.  But, that probably doesn’t help solve your problem so you may need to dig a little deeper to get to the root of the problem and to find a solution to fix it.  There are many different ways money can affect a relationship and how it is handled can depend greatly on the specifics of the problem.  However, there are some general tips you can use to get past your money problems.

As with every aspect in a relationship, you need to communicate effectively about your money situation.  In a long term, committed relationship this means you should fully disclose all of your financial issues to one another.  If you hide issues regarding finances, you are guaranteed to have them come out eventually.  It’s better to be honest about them from the get go.  This means that you can not tell your partner that you spent twenty dollars on a blouse when it actually cost two hundred.  Or guys, that the new circular saw you just bought was a gift from your brother.

Usually one person is in charge of the bills and taking care of the practical matters.  However, creating your budget should be done together and there should be regular meetings about your financial situation.  Think of your marriage or relationship like it’s a business.  Discuss your budget and come up with all your line items for what you will spend each month together.  Then, even if only one of you takes care of paying the bills and updating the budget with actual dollar amounts, come together at least once a month to review where you are.

Making sure everyone is on the same page and aware of what is going on is important to keeping the relationship financially healthy.  If one of you has some spending habits that exceed the budget, though, these issues need to be addressed and dealt with to fix them.  If all else fails or if you are both not very good with money it may be time to consult a professional.  Just as if you may go to couple’s counseling if you are having relationship issues dealing with emotions, you may want to consult a financial advisor if you are having trouble handling your money situation.
