Dating a Military Man
When you are in a relationship sometimes you are faced with business travel or personal issues where you have to be separated from time to time. Most couples have to deal with that at one point or another and it is not to stressful. In fact, it can be a much needed break to get away from the hubby for awhile, right? But, if you are dating a man in the military, all that changes. You are no longer dealing with short stints of separation for work or vacation. Instead you are now dealing with months at a time being apart and all the while knowing your man can possibly lose his life because he is serving in the military. That puts everything on an entirely different playing field, doesn’t it?
It can certainly be difficult and complicated to get a relationship like this to work. On one hand you are incredibly proud of your man for serving his country so honorably. On the other you feel a bit selfish because you want him home with you. How do you cope with it all? First, you need to make the most of what it is you do have. When you are apart, make sure you do not take each other for granted. Send emails and love letters to each other so you know how you feel about one another. When he gets leave and you can spend some quality time together, even if it is for a weekend, make the most of it.
Whenever you talk to him, do not complain about all the stresses you are under. Of course, you are left holding the bag while he’s been deployed. You have to pay the bills, take care of the kids and deal with all the daily minutia of life. However, he’s not exactly on a tropical cruise in the Caribbean. Think about that before you start to feel sorry for yourself and make him feel worse when all he’s looking for is a little love and encouragement.
Stay busy! You are not the only woman in this predicament and military wives and girlfriends have a tendency to support one another. Take advantage of that support. Make sure you go out and spend some time with your friends and alone. If you need to vent or have a good cry, others who are going through the same thing will be there to help you through it.
