With the divorce rate as high as it is, marriage can be a scary prospect. But then again, there are as many successes as there are failures so somebody is doing it right. Before you decide to take the plunge and get married, you might want to analyze what it is the successful marriages have that make it work. There are certainly no guarantees when it comes to matters of the heart but there are some secrets to a good marriage that seem to be consistent in all successful relationships.
Everyone has heard that communication is of utmost importance in a relationship so it is not necessary to restate that, right? Wrong. Communication is of utmost importance in a relationship. Perhaps what is even more important is effective communication. This doesn’t mean harping and nagging at one another but really opening up and discussing your feelings. In addition to that you have to be willing to listen, really listen, to your partner’s feelings also. If you two have a clear understanding of where you stand you can work on little problems before they fester and become big ones. You can also celebrate your successes together. Communication can be a talk about how wonderful your relationship is and how happy you two are. It doesn’t always have to be doom and gloom.
The couple who plays together, stays together. The same can be said for laughter. No matter where you are in a relationship, what work responsibilities you have or what children’s activities need to be handled, you need to take care of your relationship. All the rest may fall by the wayside if your core relationship isn’t sound so it benefits you to put some effort into it. This means that you must take some time for yourselves. Go out on dates, have private jokes, spend some quality time together…alone. Spice up that sex life while you’re at it. If you have gotten into a sexual rut, work to get out of it.
Nobody ever said relationships are easy. They are work and effort needs to be put into it. However, if you are both committed to making it work and devote the time to do it right, then your odds improve greatly. There’s no guarantee that a relationship will work but it will have a better chance if you care for it properly and really commit to working on it.
