Flirting is fun. It is a great way to let someone know you’re interested in more than just friendship; and it makes you feel great.

While there are lots of books and articles written about how to be a good flirt, I’d like to cover a few of the fatal flirting mistakes that can sabotage your efforts:
1. Don’t Be a Tease - if you’re flirting with someone it is sending a message that you are interested in them in a romantic way. Flirting indiscriminately can result in hurt feelings and make you look like insensitive and even cruel. Bottom line: Flirting is not just about making yourself feel good or getting attention—it’s about the other person’s feelings too.
2. Draw the Line At Flirting With People In Relationships - it doesn’t matter if they are trying to flirt with you, or if you think they are incredibly attractive. If you are flirting with someone who is married or in a committed relationship, you are the one who looks like a home wrecker. Remember the Golden Rule of Flirting: Flirt on to others as you would have others flirt on to your husband/wife.
3. Don’t Show All Your Cards At Once - the best flirting leaves something to the imagination. If you’re coming on too strong and adding lots of physical contact or talking about things that would make a sailor blush, you’re missing the whole point.
4. Be Considerate of Other People - if you’re out with a small group of people and you are flirting heavily with one person it can make the situation uncomfortable for everyone else. Don’t force people to watch your flirting as if it were a television show. Have fun with the group and throw in a little subtle flirting if you want; but don’t make the situation all about you trying to get the other person’s attention.
5. Take Your Cues From the Flirtee - no matter how much you like someone, if you are trying to flirt with them and they are not responding, don’t pursue it. There could be any number of reasons why they are not flirting back, but if you keep going after they’ve made it clear they aren’t interested it makes you look foolish and desperate. Remember—keep your dignity!
