Good Dating Communication

Communication is huge when you are dating someone and trying to take it to the next level.  Find out all you need to know about keeping the communication lines open between you and your sweetie!

Most people are aware that communication is important in a relationship.  While dating, though, it is still important regardless of how casual or serious you are.  Before dating someone, make sure you know what it is you want in the long run.  If you date someone who is looking for a casual relationship and someone to just have fun with, make sure your goals are the same.  You’ll go through some heartbreak if you get too attached only to find out the other person had no intention of getting serious with you.  So communication of your ultimate goals and expectations is important early on in the relationship.

Make sure to check in with each other while you are dating.  Even if you seem to have a great relationship, talk on the phone for hours and explore art, science, politics and culture together do you ever talk about the status of your relationship?  People are complicated and your intentions at the beginning may very well change after a time.  So, make sure you are on the same page regarding your goals.  You don’t have to have a serious sit down talk but casual conversation where you drop some hints will probably be sufficient especially in the beginning.  If things start to change, though, you should have a talk.

It is also important to communicate bits and pieces about yourself to the person you are dating.  This helps both of you determine if there is a true compatibility worth a long term investment or if it’s just a fling, friends with benefits or lust.  None of the options are necessarily bad as long as you are both amenable to where the relationship is…or is not…going.  But if you think you might be in this for the long haul, it’s better to get your skeletons out of the closet sooner than later.  They may come back to haunt you and you will regret getting too serious too quickly.

In any relationship communication is important.  Friends, family, lovers and co workers should all have various levels of communication to make sure everything is going well.  But when you are dating communication plays a particularly important and specific role.  You need to know where you both stand to see if there is room for growth.  You want to be sure you are not hurt or inadvertently hurt the other one.  You also need to make sure there is compatibility within your relationship to see if you want to make a deeper commitment eventually.
