The Importance of Communication
So you have probably realized by now that good communication in a relationship is important. There is no denying that effectively communicating with your spouse or partner will enhance the relationship greatly.
However, if so many people agree that communication in a relationship is important, why do so many people fail miserably at accomplishing it? This is because while everyone knows this is important, not everyone knows how to effectively accomplish it. Communication in a relationship can actually be more a lot more difficult than it initially sounds. When you are in a relationship, emotions come in to bear which can block some of the logical steps you would normally take when trying to express your feelings.
Communication in a relationship starts with listening. This does not mean doing so half heartedly or doing so begrudgingly only waiting so that you can say what is on your mind. Really listening to your partner takes effort and understanding. Make eye contact when communicating with your partner the whole time they are talking and be sincere about wanting to understand their point of view. When they are finished, ask direct questions about what it was they said and repeat your understanding of what they relayed to you during the conversation. This will show you care about good communication in a relationship, that you were actually listening and that you understand them. You do not necessarily have to agree with it, but you should try to understand it.
Great communication in a relationship also involves expressing your feelings in a positive, constructive manner. Accusations and arguments will only put the other person on the defensive. Instead, express how you feel about a particular situation and ask for opinions on how the matter can be solved. Be concise with your discussions and do not ramble during the conversation. Remaining calm is important for good communication in a relationship. This may be difficult especially if it is an emotionally charged situation. Many people tend to gain momentum as they talk and get more agitated. Try not to do this or the other person will become defensive and tune out and then your effort at trying to communicate with your partner will surely fail.
Finally, make sure you pick an opportune time for attempting to communicate with your spouse or partner regarding important matters. Communication in a relationship can be marred when there are multiple distractions that are unavoidable. For example, do not call your significant other at work and lay out all your problems. The other person is likely distracted and unable to give their full attention to you. This is more likely to cause friction and will hamper the other person’s ability to listen effectively. Also, take a few deep breaths before initiating a conversation if you are mad. You are more likely to exacerbate the situation if you are not calm and willing to be constructive.
Effective communication in a relationship is important and this is undeniable. However, the way you choose to communicate is equally important in order to express your feelings and come to mutual agreements. If you are a willing listener and discuss issues in a calm, positive manner, you are more likely to get positive results from your partner. Take note of the way you communicate and see if there is possibly room for improvement in obtaining great communication in a relationship.
